LAP PhD Day 2025

We are proud to look back on this year’s LAP PhD Day which took place on 25th April under the theme of Science and Beyond!
The day brought together PhD candidates for a vibrant day of learning and connection. The Dean of the LUMC Prof. Dr. Marlies Reinders opened the event, highlighting LUMC’s commitment to impactful, socially engaged research.
Prof. dr. Andrew Webb inspired the audience with his global journey in MRI innovation, from Cambridge to pioneering MRI solutions in Africa, while PhD candidate Daphne Raad shared her passion for preventive health and taboo-breaking conversations in patient care. Parallel sessions on various topics were also included in the day's diverse programme - in the Career Paths session, Prof. dr. Patrick Rensen, Dr. Ramzi Khalil, and Dr. Abena Amoah reflected on international research careers shaped by their PhD journeys.
Entrepreneurship workshops by PLNT Stéfan Ellenbroek and Sven van der Vlies, as well as biotech session by Thijs Remijn from Leiden Bioscience Park and Aisling Foley and Dr. Brice Meulah Tcheubousou from start-up companies ExCulture and Biotactical, showcased how biotech innovation can generate sustainable alternatives to healthcare solutions and highlighted career opportunities for LUMC PhD candidates. Petra van de Voorde discussed the financial challenges and strategic decisions facing academic institutions and Claire Weeda from WOinActie urged us to fight against the budget cuts in higher education. In addition, the panel with Dr. Teun van Gelder, Dr. Stella Trompet, Margot Snelders Pouw, and Ivana Kancheva reminded attendees of the vital support structures readily available within the LUMC, and Prof. dr. Marco Spruit’s session on One Health emphasised the power of cross-sector data-driven collaboration to tackle global one-health challenges. Prior to the wrap-up of the day, Dr. Isabelle Kohler, founder of NextMinds, led an interactive session on career planning beyond academia, offering actionable insights on translating PhD skills into diverse industries. This rich programme showed how science operates in a wider, complex and multi-faceted context.
A lively lunch break featured LUMC Pride, LUMC Global and LUMC Women, along with the fantastic event sponsors Ridderprint and ProefschriftMaken whose support made the day possible! The day concluded with the Supervisor of the Year Award where the 1st place was awarded to Dr. Eline Meijer for being a supportive supervisor who goes the extra mile, followed by the wonderful Dr. Nanda Horeweg, and Dr. Arwen H. Pieterse.
LAP PhD Day 2025 was more than an event for PhDs in the LUMC — it was a celebration of curiosity, courage, and community, equipping researchers for the future of Science and beyond!
LAP is looking for a new Board Member to take over the newsletter!
As a general board member, your main responsibility will be drafting and sending the newsletter, but will also include attending board meetings and supporting the overall functioning of the board and its objectives. The LAP board currently consists of 9 enthusiastic PhD Candidates. While everybody has tasks of preference, we have board meetings every 2-3 weeks, and regular meetings with the Dean, the Graduate School, and other LUMC parties.
In return, you get to learn about the ins and outs of the LUMC, work with a diverse board of motivated fellow PhD candidates who want to make a difference for the PhD community, and you can have the opportunity to implement your ideas and see them flourish in practice! We look forward to meeting you! Send us an e-mail and we can plan a meeting to get to know each other!
