PhD Safe Space Sweet
We are happy to announce that Merel van Diepen (Clinical Epidemiology) has been awarded the Safe Space Sweet 🎉 🍰! Her PhD candidates describe Merel as a caring and understanding person who always places their well-being and growth above all else. She manages to create a safe environment where challenges and mistakes are shared as learning opportunities. Merel has been an incredible mentor during the PhD journey, ensuring her pupils feel heard in both their research and personal development. She provides constructive feedback, offers thoughtful guidance and makes the PhD process feel less overwhelming for them.
Congratulations to Merel on this well-deserved recognition!

Do you have someone who made a difference in your PhD journey? This could be a fellow PhD candidate, supervisor, librarian or someone else at the LUMC whose contribution should not go unnoticed. Nominate them for the next PhD Safe Space Sweet! Share their story and let us celebrate the unsung heroes of academia.
LAP is looking for a new Board Member to take over the newsletter!
As a general board member, your main responsibility will be drafting and sending the newsletter, but will also include attending board meetings and supporting the overall functioning of the board and its objectives. The LAP board currently consists of 9 enthusiastic PhD Candidates. While everybody has tasks of preference, we have board meetings every 2-3 weeks, and regular meetings with the Dean, the Graduate School, and other LUMC parties.
In return, you get to learn about the ins and outs of the LUMC, work with a diverse board of motivated fellow PhD candidates who want to make a difference for the PhD community, and you can have the opportunity to implement your ideas and see them flourish in practice! We look forward to meeting you! Send us an e-mail and we can plan a meeting to get to know each other!
Green Thesis printing Factsheet
Within LUMC, 200 PhD candidates graduate each year. Printing your PhD thesis is needed, to provide a copy to the Opposition Committee, Beadle and University Library, and the hard copy is of course a way to recognise your years of hard work in a physical form. However, when printing your thesis, it would be good to keep in mind that printing has an environmental impact, e.g. through the use of materials (e.g. trees) and greenhouse gas emissions related to the production process. We therefore encourage you to find a balance between printing and sustainability. To help with this, you can find options for more sustainable thesis printing in this factsheet (with thanks to the PHEG Green Team).
PhD thesis spreadsheet
Click here for a public google spreadsheet in which you can leave your contact details to get in touch with other PhD candidates who are printing their thesis soon to get a group discount. It is your own responsibility to get in touch with each other and organize the group discount with the printing company.
