LAP PhD Day 2025: Science and beyond!
25.04.2025

We are working hard to put together an amazing program for our PhD Community. The PhD Day will be full of interesting workshops, plenary sessions, as well as networking opportunities and fun drinks! You can register for the PhD Day here.
As in previous years, we will award the Supervisor of the Year! Is your supervisor a great mentor who always encourages open communication and is kind and understanding? Yet they also know how to tell you when you sidetracked a bit and guide you towards becoming a great researcher? They are maybe also a role model and someone who often inspires you? Then give them that credit they deserve and nominate them for this year's Supervisor of the Year Award!🏆🏅 Filling the survey only takes a few moments but it can go a long way! Let's recognise all the excellent mentorship and supervision at the LUMC together! Nominate your supervisor!

LAP is looking for new Board Members!
As a general board member, your responsibilities will likely include attending board meetings, drafting and sending the newsletter, organizing events, communicating with other PhD Candidates and faculty members, and supporting the overall functioning of the board and its objectives. The LAP board currently consists of 8 enthusiastic PhD Candidates. While everybody has tasks of preference, we have board meetings every 2-3 weeks, and regular meetings with the Dean, the Graduate School, and other LUMC parties.
In return, you get to learn about the ins and outs of the LUMC, work with a diverse board of motivated fellow PhD candidates who want to make a difference for the PhD community, and you can have the opportunity to implement your ideas and see them flourish in practice! We look forward to meeting you! Send us your CV and motivation letter!
PhD Representation
PhD Safe Space Sweet
This initiative gives PhD candidates the opportunity to thank someone who has made a meaningful impact on their personal journey—whether through support, encouragement, or simply being there when it mattered most. This month, the award goes to Caroline Serlie, manager of the Centre for Innovation of Medical Education and the Research Group Research of Medical Education.
The research group is not only led by prof. Friedo Dekker, but also by Caroline as the manager. In this role she has regular meetings with all the PhD Candidates under her supervision, every 2-3 weeks. Within the research group it is perceived that this structure of dual management and regular supervision by a non-content coach/manager lessens the unique challenges that come with completing a PhD trajectory. PhD Candidates under her supervision stated “she always has our back and follows up on the arrangements made together”. “During our “bila”, Caroline listens to the challenges we encounter in our trajectories, and helps to find solutions”. She is perceived as a very good listener and as a particularly supportive mentor and manager, being available for a chat whenever a problem comes up, and regularly checking up on how things are going. She also goes beyond her formal responsibilities to text words of encouragement when one of the PhD Candidates is having an important day. The Safe Space Sweet cake was handed over by the Dean of our Faculty, Marlies Reinders.

Do you have someone who made a difference in your PhD journey? This could be a fellow PhD candidate, supervisor, librarian or someone else at the LUMC whose contribution should not go unnoticed. Nominate them for the next PhD Safe Space Sweet! Share their story and let us celebrate the unsung heroes of academia.
