Dear fellow PhD Candidates,

We hope you all had a wonderful summer! 🌞

Due to our own vacations, the September newsletter is arriving a little later than usual. But we’re excited to share that we have plenty of activities planned for October, so be sure to check them out!

PS: Don't forget the Graduate School x LAP semester kick-off this afternoon at 16.00 in Lecture Hall 6, with drinks afterwards the Hepatho Bar 📣🎉🍻

Warm regards,
The LAP board

General information

Update on printing costs
The compensation regulation was to expire on 1 January 2026 due to the imposed cuts in higher education, but has been suspended until 31 December 2026. In practical terms, this means that the allowance will only be paid if the promotion takes place before 31 December. See here for more information.

2. Lunch lecture Fit voor Morgen: Time management "Beyond the Clock"
During your research, you will find yourself juggling different projects, deadlines, and responsibilities. How do you decide on priorities and how do you stay focused? Since 2012, Ron de Jong has been coaching and training PhD candidates and other researchers. Drawing on many years of experience, he has gained first-hand insight into time and self-management challenges faced by both early-career and more experienced researchers. In this lecture, we will look beyond the clock and explore why well-known time management tips and tricks often only work to a limited extent. Using relatable examples, we will discuss prioritisation, procrastination, focus, perfectionism, and communication. You will be encouraged to reflect on your own patterns and discover how you can make choices that better align with what you need. Register here!

📅 Tuesday 20 October
⌚ 12.00-13:00, followed by free lunch
📍 Lecture hall 3 (lunch at Paleijhs)

3. LUMC Global x LAP: Rising Together
Doing a PhD can be exciting and rewarding, but it also comes with pressure, uncertainty, setbacks, and moments when academic life can feel quite isolating. With this in mind, LAP and LUMC Global Community are organizing Rising Together: Building Resilience, Connection, and Optimism in Academia. The afternoon will bring LUMC PhD candidates together for a series of small-group conversations around well-being, resilience, connection, and the realities of academic life, using an interactive World Café format. Invited speakers will join the discussions and share their perspectives, while there will also be plenty of space to hear from each other, exchange experiences, and connect with fellow PhD candidates. The event is part of this year’s Thrive Together: Mental Health, Well-Being, and Connection in Academia theme. Register here!

📅 Thursday 29 October
⌚ 16.00-18.00

4. SAVE THE DATE

Looking for researchers with a religious background!
Together with the Diversity & Inclusion Board, Fit voor Morgen (HR) is also exploring a dinner event around the theme of fasting in February. They are currently looking for people with a Christian, Jewish, or Buddhist background who would like to contribute ideas and perspectives to help shape the event. If this sounds interesting to you, or if you know someone who might be interested, feel free to reach out to Marieke van Hartevelt.

Psychologist newsletter
As we enter the autumn months, we are pleased to share the new edition of the PhD Psychologists Newsletter. This edition reflects on well-being, diversity, and the different realities of PhD life. In this issue, you will find:

  • Reflections on one year of the Giftedness PhD Peer Support Group and what participants’ experiences can teach us about creating greater awareness of neurodiversity within the academic community.
  • A workshop series for international PhD candidates and Master’s students, starting in September, exploring cultural adaptation, communication, connection, and resilience.
  • An overview of groups and activities available to PhD candidates in the coming months.
  • Challenges of balancing parenthood and academic life, and inviting PhD candidates to pre-register for the parents’ workshop taking place in 2027.
